On a recent visit to the South Pacific, it wasnt lost on me that the very act of travelling there by plane added to its existential threat. The Pacific Islands Forum had just wrapped up and it made real to me that as peoples of Oceania, the need to work together against climate change, organised crime and imperial overtures is urgent.
An allegorical painting using elements of magic realism, this is my response to interpreting our place in the region. Traditional Polynesian crafts such as Tivaevae patchwork, wooden carving, and the dog, cat and rooster, ubiquitous animals in the South Pacific are represented.
Ive borrowed from the German folk tale, The Bremen Town Musicians by The Brothers Grimm which tells the story of neglected animals that band together. They have limited power on their own but with their individual skills and working as a team, theyre able to vanquish the bandits.
