The defiantly campy figure created in King, is an example of camp and play and how we express our otherness in today’s world. The figure represented in King is a modern take on the clown who has often been the face of political movements in the past. Even in some of the darkest times, whether it be drag and camp, theatre or play, ‘Clowning’ has been a protest against the ‘clowns’ in power, expressing our individuality, our queerness and doing differently against the norms. The symbolism of the King playing card is a statement against perceived stereotypes of gender and sexuality.
