Excavator by Joel Arthur

Joel Arthur’s practice focuses on the intersection of genre and mode in painting, fusing landscape and detached subjects that are drawn from still life constructions or other implied imagery. In Arthur’s paintings such as ‘Excavator’, artificial forms weave and meld with the depiction of landscape as a kind of human intervention or obscured subject within a theatrical setting. This infers a human habitation of the natural world, a tension between construction and destruction.
Joel Arthur graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) from the ANU School of Art and Design in 2014. He has exhibited around Australia and has recently been a finalist in the Fremantle Print Award (2023), Muswellbrook Art Prize (2023), Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize (2022), and was awarded Highly Commended in the Waverley Art Prize (2022). Arthur currently lives and practices in Canberra/Kamberri.
