War, whether past, present or into the future, empties cities, towns and villages of people, the life blood of place.
This monoprint is from a sketch done in Poland in my mother’s hometown where in 1943, half the inhabitants were marched out of town. Most were murdered and never seen again. Like the war in Ukraine, displacing and killing, towns and villages are emptied of people, leaving only ruins or ghost towns to show hundreds of years of history.
I wanted to capture a sense of gloom, foreboding a heaviness that comes with this grey stillness devoid of vitality and daily bustle of simple human activity
