Elegy, 1/1 by Aliki Yiorkas
WINNER OF THE TRADITIONAL PRINT PRIZE
30 x 38cm | etching
Aliki Yiorkas’ practice is material and process driven, and is a hybrid of drawing, print, painting, collage and artists books. Aliki is interested in the ways people engage with the materiality of objects through the techniques of intaglio, aquatint and collage.
This work was inspired from found black-bordered mourning stationery from 1905, which speak to rituals around death and mourning. Bringing together the experience of two different cultures, Aliki endeavours to bring an awareness of the ability of objects to affect us. ‘Elegy’ evokes the patina of time, a sense of history, and the stain of memory.
