Matthew Tome is an artist who works in painting, drawing, printmaking and installation. His practice is multidisciplined, centred on drawing but using many forms, methods and scales.
Recent work has developed from drawings of, and amongst, trees. Drawing sessions in Centennial Park during and after lockdown have been pivotal. The paintings have developed from these and explore the physical form of trees, the network of forms and
paces around them, the energy and light amongst them. These ideas evolve in the painter’s language of line and edge, colour and tone, transparency and opacity. The abstracted compositions are stages on which to describe tension, movement, space and intensity.
Matthew has exhibited extensively since 1986 in solo and group exhibitions and has worked on a number of collaborative projects. This year he was a finalist in the Muswellbrook Art Prize.
