How long have you been at WWAS?
I attended a class in term 1 of 2021
Where do you travel from each week?
You could say I travelled from afar as I live in Singapore! I always come to Sydney each year and try to ensure I line up my travel dates with the WWAS term. While attending my recent class, I had a place in Bondi so it was a pleasant walk up Bondi Road for me.
What class do you do at WWAS?
Sculpture classes
What do you do when you are not creating?
While vacationing in Sydney, no day is complete without a “dip in the briney”. Bondi Beach is pretty close. I go to Pilates classes, am part of a men’s group called Mankind Project and I love the theatre.
What are you reading or listening to?
I always have a book on the go, I’m currently reading “Klara and the Sun” by Kasuo Ishiguro.
Who is your tutor and what do you like about them?
Richard Byrnes was generous with his time, patient and encouraging. Whenever I felt like I was stuck on something he could talk me through the problem.
Why did you join WWAS? or Why do you keep coming back to WWAS?
I would drive past it and walk past it all the time. I knew I wanted to return to an art practice so I eventually plucked up the courage to go in one afternoon. Justine was in the office, she took me around the building and told me about the courses. It gave me enough confidence to try. I realized that there were people feeling just like me.
What are you currently working on?
Nothing right now, I hope to get back at year end and do more sculpting.
What inspires or motivates your art practice?
So many things – for instance, seeing something I’ve seen countless times before, and then suddenly seeing it quite differently to all the other times I’ve looked at that object.
Who are your favourite artists?
I don’t have a favourite artist. My wife and I have collected a lot of art over the years. Recently we went to Marfa, Texas and saw Donald Judd’s work. Last weekend I was the Jeffery Smart retrospective at the NGA in Canberra.
What would you say to someone thinking about taking an art class at WWAS?
Don’t hesitate, have a go!
