We, Rose, Virginia, and Nicola Wilfred – Wagilag Sisters from Numbulwar in the Northern Territory – painted this car bonnet. Through black and white linework, we depict our Ngilipitji Country: the billabong and its guardian, the rainbow serpent; the outstation of our childhood; buffaloes; and the pandanus we harvest weekly to weave. Speaking the endangered language Ritharr?u, we use art to share, protect, and warn of our fragile culture. Reuse is central in our world – finding an abandoned car in the bush, we chose to reimagine it.
