Laterite is based on observations of the geography of Eastern Sydney and reflects on the fluidity of landforms. It reproduces the sedimentation that makes the layered rock strata as portions of un-primed canvas are placed on the studio floor and worked over several weeks on both sides. This is done using strategies of applying pigment that allow material agency as an open-ended response to my surroundings. The palette draws from the iron rich, ferruginous banding in the sandstone along Sydney’s coastline not only in aesthetics but using pigments which are themselves drawn from the land.
