In Praise of Age is an oil and wax portrait on linen. It is brightly coloured, joyous in making age visible, inclusive and dignified rather than hidden. The image is abstracted rather than realistic and accentuates the discerning gaze of the woman. A slight body is evident in the sloping shoulders. The gaze indicates the psychological state of the subject and the way in which the portrait itself is looked back upon. Who looks at who and how is important. And who is to be seen. The subject of the portrait is Madame Vacani my husband’s grandmother. Madame Vacani taught dance till she was in her 70s.
