Nursing an image out of its black womb into hope in the form of light has a primordial spiritual magic. I try to emphasize the singularity and silence of a child emerging from darkness into the light.
The image is a Mezzotint which is a technique that has remained unchanged for 300 years. The process achieves tonality by roughening the metal plate with a rocker allowing the teeth of the rocker to create burrs that hold ink. The rocked areas produce a rich black print and areas that have been burnished will hold less ink. This process enables a high level of tonal richness.
