‘As if I would be proud of you’ is a silkscreen painting and mixed media relief that explores how important life milestones are documented in photographs and in their physical environments. The materials are derived from billiards tables common to gatherings in formal event spaces, whilst the geometric shape is derived from a combination of medals and awards used to denote success. I screen-printed a subtle wash of colour against the grain of the fabric so the image appeared stained or faded like a physical memory. The original photograph of wedding guests surrounding a bride is from my mother’s discarded 1987 photo album — a photo she couldn’t remember taking, at a wedding of friends she no longer had, who are no longer together. Through the combination of symbols related to gatherings, success and value, I am questioning the superficial grandeur of such events, while focusing on their importance and emotional connection to people and communities.
