Alone At Last depicts an endless field of near-identical houses stretching beyond the horizon. Rooftop presses against rooftop; proximity suggests density, community, success. Yet emotional distance prevails.

This work by artist Louise Carter is part of HOUSE, a body of work interrogating one of Australia’s most deeply held beliefs – that owning a home is the ultimate marker of having made it. But what if the house is an illusion? What if ownership quietly closes doors to spontaneity, to genuine connection? What if the walls we build to protect ourselves become the walls that contain us?

Alone At Last sits inside that tension. Abundance and isolation. Uniformity and quiet erasure of self. The houses recede endlessly, each one a life accounted for – mortgage, title, pride – and yet the painting asks: in gaining all of this, what have we lost?
