Contemporary Painting & Drawing **Virtual Studio, Term 2** with Philippa Hagon
This course looks at what is happening in Painting and Drawing today.
Students have the opportunity to follow set class work or explore a research method studio practice.
Varies approaches and techniques are investigated – from the fundamentals to pushing the boundaries to extend your individual art practice and your visual language. Students are guided in the medium of their choice but are encouraged to broaden their practice.
Formal qualities such as: – shape, form, mark making variations, spatial complexities, tonal qualities, colour theory, compositional devices and material & medium use are explored and deconstructed for experimentation to arise.
Working from life & existing material, students will produce many studies, each informing the next with surprising results quite different from the source material. Some students push further into abstraction, blurring the line between abstraction & representation, while others may continue learning observational skills. Artists both historical & contemporary are looked at & their influence discussed.
Exploration & development will be different for each student.
A series of works will be developed.
All levels welcome – from the complete beginner to advance levels.
The Virtual Studio
The virtual studio/class is similar to the in-studio class. Some students engage with set class work while others engage with their studio research practice. Classes are modified and personalised for students that enrol and attend.
Philippa is present and active in real-time throughout the online 3-hour sessions. Student questions are responded to promptly with advice or live demonstrations, relevant images or videos are shown relating to student interest and development. Class numbers are limited to ensure there is enough time for individual help and group criticism sessions. The sessions are not pre-recorded or recorded.
