October 21 and 22 – Understanding Colour with Deborah Marks
Come and enjoy a weekend workshop exploring colour relationships and our visual reactions to them. Through a systematic study of colour relationships, we will see the reactions different colours have when placed next to each other, as well as feeling colour relatedness. We will explore the dimensions of colour – hue, value, intensity and temperature.
This is a practical and structured workshop where students are guided through in depth colour mixing exercises. These include mixing, primary, secondary and tertiary colours, painted within a grid pattern. Students then create their own design based on the principles of design and explore harmonies and contrasts of their chosen colour scheme.
This workshop gives you the opportunity to focus, structure and make sense of this broad subject. It is suitable for beginners and those who would like to understand colour and its relationships more fully.
November 12 – The Portrait in Watercolour with Tanya Baily
This workshop presents a fabulous opportunity to paint the portrait from life, extend your watercolour skills and gain confidence.
The morning will begin with some rigorous drawing exercises on proportion and understanding the structure of the head and face. Time will be spent on the colour and shadows of skin, preparing effective palettes, and how to render gentle transitions of tone and colour. Tanya will give tips on how best to draw and prepare for a watercolour painting. Students will learn where to start and how to apply under washes and colour for success. Tanya will teach you how composition can help to capture the character of people and poses.
Students will then work on a longer pose from a live model in the studio. This workshop is suitable for those with some experience in watercolour painting. No previous experience in figure drawing or painting is required.
