Painting for Expression with Annabel Butler
Interested in a painting style between realism and abstraction? Drawing inspiration from a range of expressionist painters who sought to depict their emotional responses rather than an objective reality, this class is designed to help you paint expressively with an individual painting voice whilst increasing your knowledge and understanding of colour, composition and form. Students are encouraged to paint quickly and loosely, to develop expressive brushwork and experiment with colour.
The course covers different subject matter, including various expressive approaches to landscape, cityscape, seascape, interiors and figuration. Each term is a stand alone program which introduces students to the work of various expressionist painters, past and present. If taken all year, the course provides a chronological framework of 20th century Expressionist movements.
Term 1 covers the European Expressionists (eg Der Blaue Reiter through to the Neue Wilden). Term 2 draws inspiration from the American Expressionist movements (eg. New York Figurative Expressionism, Bay Area Figuration). Term 3 focuses on the impact of Expressionism on Australia (eg. The Angry Penguins movement) as well as Australian Impressionism (eg. the Heidelberg School). Term 4 looks at British artists influenced by Expressionism (eg. The “School of London”/ Neo-Expressionism).
Suitable for beginners through to more experienced painters as tuition will be tailored to your individual level.
Term 2 class commences Wednesday 1 May 2019. Courses run for 9 weeks from start date.
